Politics affecting the US National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)

We offer our support to our colleagues in the United States and keep a watching brief on the situation there.

The National Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators (NAGARA) has, in a statement reaffirmed the critical importance of strong, independent, and non-partisan federal archives and records administration programs in preserving and providing access to the nation's historical records and we support their full statement which can be found here.

The Society of American Archivists has also stated that “The leadership of the Society of American Archivists (SAA) is alarmed by the dismissal of the Archivist of the United States on February 7, 2025” and we support their full statement which can be found here.

The response of the Archives and Records Association UK & Ireland will continue to be guided by that of the organisations within the USA and we will continue to monitor the situation.
