Section for Archives & Museums (ARA SAM) – Launch of Consultation on Glossary Project

The Glossary Project was launched by ARA SAM in October 2022, with the aim of mapping terms and standards commonly used across Archives and Museum sectors.

It has arisen following ARA SAM’s own engagement with professionals working in the intersection of these professions, and responding to the growing need and consensus to create a glossary and resource for mapping terms which might be commonly used across both sectors but, whose definitions vary depending on context and sector.

A developed draft version of the glossary is now complete and ready to be shared. It has been produced by members of ARA SAM’s Glossary Project Working Group, using external resources (such as TNA Mixed Collections, Collection Trust’s Framework, PAS 197 etc) to help further inform work and ensure it reflects current practice.

We are now inviting the wider sector and professionals across Archives and Museums (archivists, museums curators, conservators, rare books/libraries etc) to feedback and input into this project.

You are invited to review the latest version of the glossary and respond to a consultation survey which requests feedback and comments on the:

•    Format and style of the glossary
•    Terms identified for both Archives and Museums
•    Definitions populated for the terms
•    External and secondary sources list

To take part in the consultation, please read the Glossary Project Working Document here and complete the following survey here.

The consultation will run from Monday 1 July to Saturday 31 August 2024 in the first instance, with possibility of extension depending on number of responses.

For any specific queries/feedback or further information about ARA SAM and its activities, please email: sam@archives.org.uk
