Decolonising the curriculum, the help teachers need and the role of the archives in achieving a decolonised history

The next Archives for Learning and Education Section's (ALES) training event will take place in November, and is being given by Orlene Badu.

Orlene Badu is a Leadership and Education consultant and racial literacy advocate who has extensive senior leadership experience and was the head teacher at a diverse primary school in Hackney for seven years. She also completed a secondment as Head of Primary at an all-through pupil referral unit. She now works on a number of projects across London and the UK with a focus on race equity, leadership and impactful ACTION.

Orlene’s session, ‘Decolonising the curriculum, the help teachers need and the role of the archives in achieving a decolonised history’, will be held using Zoom from 9.30-11.30am on Monday 7 November 2022. This session will address what decolonising the curriculum is and isn’t and highlight why it is of importance for all children. Teachers have had a limited history curriculum and experience many barriers to achieving a decolonised curriculum due to lack of dedicated time, resources and racial literacy. The archives sector has a role to play in supporting teachers, and this session will explore this.

Having created Hackney's Diverse curriculum units, Orlene trains a number of teachers on the resources they could use to do the work of empowering their pupils and themselves and one of these ways is through the use of local archives. This session will share the ways that we can work to ensure all children learn a balanced curriculum that focuses on the positive strengths of all. There will also be opportunities for break-out room discussions and a question-and-answer session with the speaker at the end.

The event will cost £30 for ARA members and £40 for non-members.  Please book your place on Eventbrite by Monday 31 October 2022:
