Getting social with archives: social media advocacy in archive settings

This webinar focussed on social media including a range of innovative ideas and contributions from colleagues from across the sector. Speakers included:

  • the Highland Archive Centre's Lorna Steele on the 'Learning with Lorna' series,

  • Milllie Carroll of the York Museums Trust on their social media campaigns including 'Objects in our collection that killed Sean Bean',

  • Adam Koszary from the Royal Academy of Arts on what he's learned from years of experience doing social media for arts and heritage institutions, and

  • Karyn Williamson on the 'Explore Your Archive' website and using the Campaign to advocate for your service.

“Learn With Lorna – creating a film series and growing an audience”: Lorna Steele, Community Engagement Officer, Highland Archive Centre The Learn with Lorna films started in March 2020 as a series of Facebook Lives created to connect people to the Highland Archive Service collections while our buildings were closed. They have now run every week for over a year, covering a wide range of topics and garnering a global audience with, to date (April 2021) over 165k views. Lorna will talk about how the series is created, the publicity and advocacy it has created for the Highland Archive Service, and the pitfalls and challenges overcome.

"Using Social Media to reach the masses": Millie Carroll, Digital Communications Officer, York Museums Trust Millie will highlight some of the successful social media campaigns delivered by York Museums Trust in 2020/2021 including 'Objects in our collection that killed Sean Bean' and 'Curator Battle'. Millie will also discuss how a 'being social on social media' has helped change their tone of voice online and hugely improved online engagement and reach.

"Confessions of a social media manager": Adam Koszary, Social Media and Editorial Content Manager for the Royal Academy of Arts, London Adam will talk about what he's learned after years of doing social media for university museums, libraries and art galleries, and cover some of the core challenges arts and heritage institutions tend to face trying to succeed online. And yes, it includes copyright, how to have fun and what TikTok is.
