Getting started in web archiving - introduction

This 3-minute overview introduces the getting started series. Once completed, you will be able to understand and define key web archiving terms and workflows. You will have tested and evaluated some of the open source tools available, and understand how to apply your knowledge to your workplace. The training facilitator is Kirsty Fife, Lecturer in Digital Information and Curatorial Practice at MMU and a practitioner with over a decade of experience working in the UK archive sector.

Web archiving presentation 1: Introduction to web archiving

This session introduces and defines key terms in web archiving. We explore what web archiving is, what it is not, and why it is important. We introduce some UK-based web archiving initiatives and projects, and explore web archiving networks and resources to help you develop your knowledge. Length: 19 minutes.

Web archiving presentation 2: Web archiving workflows

This next webinar identifies and summarise web archiving models and workflows. We introduce the web archiving life cycle model developed by the Archive-It team. We consider appraisal and selection, storage and organisation, quality assurance and analysis and use/replay/playback. Length: 25 minutes.

Web archiving presentation 3: Open-source tools

Open-source tools are the focus of this webinar. We explain what open source and closed-source tools and software are. We then identify open-source tools that support web-archiving, such as Conifer, Heritrix, Brozzler, Social Feed Manager, Archiveweb.page, Replayweb.page and Playback. This includes a comprehensive list from the International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC).

Length: 11 minutes.

Web archiving presentation 4: Demonstration of tools

The final webinar gives a practical demonstration of Conifer, Archiveweb.page and Replayweb.page, enabling you to try these tools yourself. You will also learn how to apply this knowledge to your own organisational context, whether large service or one person archive service. Opportunity to try out tools. Length: 46 minutes.
